I was excited to get a sneak peek of one of the most anticipated restaurant openings of the year. I got in – not only to get a look around, but I also was able to sample some of the great dishes. It was well worth the wait.
The bar side has a green tile wall as the backdrop. A large horseshoe bar with a black concrete countertop focuses on a metal tower backbar complete with a lucky Maneki-neco cat.
The dining room side has a mix of traditional Chinese elements – a large tiger painting and red paper lanterns. They are artfully placed in a loft like space with a high communal table in the center of the space.
Everything I had at the dinner was delicious. I sampled the pork belly, paper chicken, hanger steak and almond boneless chicken. An interesting menu item was the Sherry selection. they were well paired with the entree items.
I cannot wait for The Peterboro to open, so I can sample the rest of the menu.
Grand Opening February 6, 2015

The Grand Opening of Cafe 78 was in conjunction with the Winter 2015 Opening of the MOCAD galleries.
Under the detail-oriented direction of Dave Kwiatkowski (Sugarhouse, Wright & Co.) and with the delicious-oriented food of Marc Djozlija (Wolfgang Puck, Wright & Co.) Cafe 78 is a great artistic addition to Detroit’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
Opening night was a big party. Chef Marc’s food plates came out of the amazingly small kitchen and looked great. I did not eat there on opening night as I was just in time for the artist’s gallery tour. My plan was to go back the next day for dinner when I could sample things in a quieter atmosphere. I arrived on Saturday night after the museum had closed – and just before the cafe opened. A very quiet atmosphere is what I got, as I was the only customer in the room. What I did not realize was for the first weekend they had limited hours – and no food, with Marc back in the Wright & Co. kitchen. I will be back to have dinner as the menu looked great.
The craft cocktails (as you would expect from Sugarhouse and Wright & Co. trained bartenders) were creative, delicious and colorful. As the Cafe is in a contemporary art museum, color is the key in the presentation of these artistic cocktails. The craft cocktail menu is color coded, matching Pantone colors to each of the drinks. A fun tie-in to the museum setting, but don’t worry if you think these drinks were only concocted for the colors. I have “tested” 3 of the drinks, and can assure you that they are some of the most delicious drinks around town, color aside.
I cannot wait go go back and have dinner there, and will probably test another colorful drink.
I had the pleasure of tasting a few items on Chef Marc’s menu. I stopped in on a cold night and had the Celery Soup, Pea Meal Bacon Sliders and the Morrocan Spiced Roasted Cashews. All were good, in fact very good. In my mind I was thinking the celery soup would be bland, but it was really flavorful with the creme fraiche and crunchy garlic croutons. The pea meal sliders were a nice change from beef burgers, and all of the ingredients were very fresh. The Cashews with “morrocan spiced dust” were tasty, in some bites near the edge of my spice limit…but did not go past it. Even though I did not want to stop eating them, I was somewhat surprised at the ample serving size for the price (I had just purchased cashews at the grocery store). I was able to take some home and enjoy them the next day.
Revisited Friday July 25, 2014 – Their First Friday

The chandelier is up, the dining room is packed, the bartenders are shaking cocktails – it is Wright & Co.’s first Friday open. Bravo to the staff.
I had to come back to try some of the other menu items that I didn’t get to try on Monday. Nothing disappointed. The Pork Belly sliders were really good, the sriracha chicken skewers were spicy, the potato chips were unusual and delicious, and the teres major medium rare was exceptional.
This will be one of my favorite places for both dinner or just a perfect drink. The small plates can be a light meal or a few can be a satisfying dinner. They have Hibiki 12 year, my favorite Japanese whisky, and as expected they have there own craft cocktail list. You can get almost anything you want – except olives for a martini, but no worries the citrus twist worked just fine (and yes Jason made another unique citrus garnish).

Opening Night Preview – July 21, 2014
I had been waiting for the opening of Wright & Co. for months. I heard rumors about how great the space was going to be, and how some of the best bartenders and chefs in town were heading there. Wright & Co. is the brainchild of Dave Kwiatkowski of The Sugar House, and Marc Djozlija former executive chef of the MGM Grand Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group. I had to go on opening night, and it did not disappoint. The second floor restaurant space is in the historic Schwankovsky Temple of Music building on Woodward, with a very discrete entrance on John R., the side street. The drama starts when the elevator door opens and you are greeted by the logo on a black-grey patina steel paneled wall illuminated from the sides. The densly dark metallic passage leads you to the equally dramatic Dining Room.
The Dining Room’s tall ceiling is clad with shiny decorative tin panels and crown moulding. The bar has a tall exposed brick sidewall, and a huge stormy sailing ship painting as the backdrop. The dining side has tall windows and a prized round table in the corner turret space. I was told by the owner that they are waiting on the chandelier this week to hang above that round table. The views from the second floor up and down Woodward Avenue are great.
The food as expected was top notch – even on opening night ( as you can see the perfect execution of my dishes in the photos, -and I assure you the taste was even better ). I had warm dates, snap pea salad, and lime poached shrimp.
And the drinks, well as you would expect from The Sugar House pedigree, were perfect. The stemware was really nice as well. Chris and Jason will make the perfect cocktail for you, and yes Jason can create the perfect citrus garnish to match.
