Michael Mina’s companion to Bourbon Steak at the MGM Grand Detroit Casino is Saltwater. As you would expect, it is his seafood restaurant. Saltwater is one of the most beautiful rooms in the business. The mosaic tile ceiling with the wave pattern is an amazing installation. The great metal ring chandeliers add sophistication and sets the mood with a warm glow throughout the space. Ask for a booth and you have a semi-private space with acoustics such that you can carry on a conversation and still feel like you are part of the restaurant. If you have a party of 8 or more, they have a fabulous private dining room with high ceilings, equally tall pair of doors, and a single very impressive round table.

Tonight I was in a booth and had the Artic Char and the apple crisp dessert. Although the grilled scallion garnish did not visually add to the plate, I can assure you the char was fantastic, and the apple crisp coating was crispy and incredibly delicious.

The spectacular restaurant design is by international award winning designer,  Tony Chi.

With Michael Mina as the Chef, you can expect high quality –  and high prices to match. He is a celebrity chef with Michelin Stars at his two namesake restaurants in Las Vegas and San Francisco. Here in Detroit, you can get the full filet mignon dinner that you would expect at a top notch steak house –  but I can share a secret with you. If you sit at the bar, you can order from the Burger Menu. Presented on a clipboard, you can order Signature Burgers with toppings preselected by the chef, or create a custom burger of your own.  For $14 you can customize your burger by selecting 5 toppings from the list with the provided petite pencil.   The topping categories include Artisian Cheeses, Farmer’s Market vegetables, greens, sauces and dressings. The choices aren’t just ketchup and pickles, you can select Maytag Bleu Cheese, Bourbon carmelized onions, shaved jalepenos, wild arugula, harissa aioli, and even Mina’s own “Special Sauce”.  If you are not into the all-beef burger, you can get turkey, falafel, or even a salmon steak burger. Of course, you must also get the fries. These are not your ordinary fries. You get a “Trio of Duck Fat Fries” with a trio of accompanying sauces for $5.  Are they good?  They are fried in duck fat……they are delicious!

The restaurant was designed by Super Potato, the award winning design firm from Japan.
